Inflect Privacy Policy

Inflect helps you understand the likely tone of a text message. In short: there is no account, we never store your messages, and nothing you paste is used to train anything. To produce a read, the message is sent once over an encrypted connection to Inflect's tone service and then discarded.

What is sent, and when

When you tap Read the tone, or one of the reply nudges (warmer, shorter, more direct, lighter), the app sends the following to Inflect's tone service:

  • The message text you pasted, or the conversation you pasted. If you turned a screenshot into text, only the resulting text is sent - never the picture.
  • The relationship type of the sender (for example "Partner" or "Boss"). If you added someone by name, only their relationship type is sent - the name stays on your phone.
  • Anything you typed in the optional "anything going on" box.
  • Your calibration answers for that person, if you filled them in (a few multiple-choice answers about how that person usually texts).
  • If you tap thumbs up or down on a read: only the rating and the read's one-line headline. The message is never sent with it.

Nothing else is sent. No account, no email, no name, no device identifier, no advertising identifier, and no contacts. The first time you request a read, the app explains this and asks you to confirm.

What happens to it

  • We do not store it. The tone service, which runs on Cloudflare, forwards the request to an AI model, returns the read to your phone, and keeps nothing. Message content is never written to logs or to a database.
  • It is not used for training. The read is produced by a model from Anthropic. Anthropic does not use data sent through its API to train its models, and retains API inputs only briefly under its own data-retention policy for abuse prevention.
  • Rate limiting only. To stop abuse of the service, a one-way hash of your network address is counted for up to 24 hours. It cannot be turned back into an address and is not linked to any message.

What stays on your phone

The people you add and their names, your list of relationship types, your calibration answers, whether you have completed onboarding, and your purchase status are stored only on your device.

Screenshots. If you choose a screenshot of a chat, the text is recognised on your phone (using Apple's Vision framework on iOS, or Google's on-device ML Kit text recogniser on Android). The image is never uploaded, and Inflect does not keep it.

History is off by default. Inflect keeps no record of your reads unless you turn on "Keep past reads on this phone" in Settings. When it is on, your last 50 reads are stored only in the app's private storage on your device - never synced, never sent to us - and turning it off erases them.

Sharing a read as a picture happens through your phone's own share sheet; Inflect only draws the picture and does not send it anywhere itself.

Data we collect

Inflect has no analytics, no advertising, and no third-party tracking SDKs. We do not build profiles and we do not sell data. Apple and Google give us aggregated, anonymous download and sales figures through their normal developer dashboards; that is the only reporting we see.

In-app purchases

Inflect Pro is available as a monthly subscription, an annual subscription, or a one-time lifetime purchase. Payments are processed entirely by the Apple App Store or Google Play. We never see or receive your card number or billing details; the store tells the app whether you are subscribed. Refunds, receipts, and cancellations are handled through the respective store.

Permissions and why

  • Network access: to send a read request to the tone service and receive the read.
  • Notifications (optional): for local reminders during your free period. These are scheduled on your phone; no push service is involved.
  • Photos (optional): to pick a screenshot with the system photo picker. Inflect only receives the picture you choose, reads it on the device, and does not access the rest of your library.
  • Notification access on Android (optional): if you turn it on, Inflect can offer a "tap to read" prompt when a message from another person arrives. Nothing is read or sent until you tap it, and message text is never stored.

Children

Inflect is not directed to children under 13 and does not knowingly collect data from anyone.

Changes

If what is sent, or what happens to it, ever changes, this page will be updated and the app will ask you to confirm again before the next read.
